Locals keen on greening the city are encouraged to contact Council before planting trees on nature strips or footpaths.

Council's Tree Management Plan was adopted in June this year, and sets out a strategic and structured approach for the management of trees in the city in regard to maintenance, protection, renewal, and risk.

The plan also outlines changes regarding the types of trees that can be planted in future, and calls for an end to the planting of problem species that can pose a risk to people or property.

Council's General Manager, Jay Nankivell, said Council welcomed new plantings, but added that it was important that locals only planted approved species after making contact with Council.

"Planting on the footpath or nature strip actually requires Council approval, and we want to stick to the list of plants outlined in our Tree Management Plan," said Mr Nankivell.

"It will improve public safety, ensure adequate clearance around powerlines, reduce damage to infrastructure and housing, and generally ensure the trees have the best chance at survival.

“Council can be forced to remove trees if they are the wrong species or pose a risk to the community, and that’s the last thing we want.

"Our Parks and Gardens team are more than happy to meet with residents and inspect footpaths to ensure the best species for any location.”

The list of approved trees for street planting can be found on page 35 of the Tree Management Plan,  while a tree planting request form can be found here.

Those wishing to contact Council regarding street tree planting can do so on 8080 3300 or by calling in to the Administrative Centre in Blende Street.
