Disability Inclusive Emergency Management Forum

Coloured hands shapes in a circle with disability icons on each palm

The Disability Inclusive Emergency Planning is a free workshop about people-centred approaches to inclusive emergency management.

The workshop is part of a national initiative to build capacity, knowledge and awareness about Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction, funded by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) with support from the University of Sydney and the NSW Reconstruction Authority.

Broken Hill City Council is hosting this Forum to facilitate local discussion, consultation and collaborative effort to support needs of people with disability in emergencies. Together, we will work to identify structural and attitudinal barriers that heighten disaster risks for people with disability, and take initial steps to address these barriers.

At the Forum we will explore:

  • Person-centred approaches to emergency management
  • Local factors that increase risk for people with disability in emergencies
  • Local Strategies to reduce risk and increase the resilience of people with disability to disaster
  • Local community assets that can be shared before, during and after an emergency to keep people safe.
  • The Disability Inclusive Emergency Management (DIEM) Toolkit, which includes DIEM maturity and preparedness self-assessment tools and best practice resources.

Who should attend?
People with lived experience of disability or work in the area of disability, health or emergency management. We want to learn from your knowledge and experiences about how to make emergency management more inclusive of people with disability.
