Mrs Liz Deep-Jones

Liz Deep-Jones is an award-winning journalist, author and activist whose career spans more than 25 years in media, arts and social justice. As the Inaugural Freilich Media and Arts Activism Fellow at the Australian National University, Liz uses storytelling as a powerful tool to challenge racism, celebrate diversity and inspire change.

Liz began her career breaking barriers as one of Australia’s first female sports journalists, reporting and presenting for SBS TV Sport, news and current affairs. She hosted the national live sports program and worked alongside football legends Johnny Warren, Craig Foster and Les Murray, covering major events including the 1998 FIFA World Cup in Paris, the Sydney 2000 Olympics, and the W-League. Her work extended to Indigenous broadcasting on NITV, Mandarin news and appearances on Channel 10’s The Panel. Career highlights include interviewing the Dalai Lama, meeting Nelson Mandela, and reporting on global sporting milestones.

Beyond journalism, Liz is the Curator and Producer of We Bleed The Same, a national photographic exhibition and documentary she created to celebrate diversity, honour First Nations history, combat racism and share extraordinary stories of resilience, hope and determination that have shaped our nation. The exhibition has toured major festivals and institutions, including the Australian National University, Canberra Writers Festival, Manly Writers Festival and the International Head On Photo Festival. Liz recently launched We Bleed The Same: Yindyamarra (Wiradyuri for respect) at the Head On Photo Festival in Sydney, featuring portraits by Tim Bauer of Wiradyuri Elder Uncle Bill, a direct descendant of 1800s warrior Windradyne, alongside over 30 human rights advocates including a Holocaust survivor, Stolen Generation survivor, former child soldier and refugee. Liz is currently seeking partners and sponsors to take this powerful exhibition across Australia.

A published author of the Lucy Zeezou book series, Liz is now working on her new children’s book Izabella Rockafella: My World, Our World, inspired by her family’s rich cultural heritage and endorsed by the Dalai Lama. Through her writing, exhibitions and advocacy, Liz continues to mentor young Australians, champion inclusion and inspire a more united future.

As an Australia Day Ambassador, Liz promotes unity, respect and the celebration of Australia’s rich cultural fabric. For her, being Australian means standing up for fairness, embracing diversity and creating a future where every voice is heard.
