Support for Clean Up Australia Day

Thursday 28 February 2019

Broken Hill is getting behind the Clean Up Australia promotion with clean up events arranged around the City.

Clean Up Australia Day events will be held on March 3 and will target the Adelaide Road and Cemetery fence line in the morning, followed by another event in the afternoon on the same day targeting Creedon Street.

Tidy Towns Committee Chair, Councillor Christine Adams, said it was great to see strong community support for the initiative.

"It's great that groups are getting in and holding a few events and giving people more options to...

Winning sign design to receive finishing touches

Tuesday 26 February 2019

Melbourne-based graphic designer and artist Joe Scerri has won Council's gateway signage competition, however his design won't be unveiled just yet.

Mr Scerri has worked with a variety of design studios, advertising agencies and multimedia studios in Sydney, Basel, Zurich, and London, and established his own independent graphic design consultancy in 1996.

Mr Scerri was contacted by Council yesterday and was elated upon being informed of his success.

Councillor Jim Nolan from the judging panel said Mr Scerri also extended a kind gesture to...

Your dog, your responsibility

Monday 25 February 2019

After receiving three reports of dog attacks in the last fortnight, Council is again urging that owners take responsibility for their animals.

Council's Manager Compliance, Francois Van Der Berg, said it was imperative that owners ensure their dogs are secure at all times.

"Once a person's dog leaves its yard it doesn't just become the responsibility of Council, the Police or the wider community," he said.

"Council attends to roaming dogs where we can, but both Council and Police only get called when an attack has occurred - we can rarely...

Funding boost for community projects

Friday 22 February 2019

A big pool of Community Assistance Grants (CAG) funding is now available for organisations seeking financial assistance for their event, activity, or programme.

Round 1 of 2019/2020 funding is now open and caters for activities to be held between June and December 2019.

$75,000 is available for the current Round, after $28,000 on funding was rolled over from last year's program.

Mayor Darriea Turley urged local groups to take advantage of the extra funding before applications close on April 30.

"Our CAG program is...

February meeting wrap

Thursday 21 February 2019

Didn't catch the live stream of last night's two-hour meeting? Here's a summary of the major issues on the night:

Councillors voted against accepting a donation of six lighting towers from the Jubilee Oval to be erected at the Alma Oval. The towers are estimated to be over 30 years old and feature obsolete technology that would be expensive to install and operate. The lights would be difficult to maintain as its components are no longer manufactured, and a new substation would have to be built at the Alma Oval to allow the lights to operate. The donation was expected to cost Council up to $200,000. After the meeting...

Major works planned for Oxide Street

Wednesday 20 February 2019

Council is looking to meet with CBD businesses this month to discuss major roads works planned for Oxide Street in mid-March.

The road works would see Oxide Street gradually replaced from Crystal Street through to Wolfram Street over the course of 12 weeks.

The intersection at Sulphide and Blende streets will also be replaced as part of the works.

Council's Chief Operations Officer, Anthony Misagh, said the heavily-used portion of Oxide Street could become a safety concern if work isn't undertaken soon.

"We're aware...

New parking to assist tourists, CBD

Wednesday 20 February 2019

Council has commenced construction on a new parking area on Kintore Reserve to boost parking in the CBD district and better cater for tourists.

The $300,000 project will provide sealing and kerbing for a large parking area to accommodate seven large recreational vehicles (RVs) and 32 regular vehicles.

The site will also feature a 'dump point' to allow RVs to discharge wastewater from holding tanks, and provide extra parking for nearby services, attractions, and businesses.

Council's Chief Operations Officer, Anthony Misagh, said the project...

Renowned artist to head Sculpture Symposium

Monday 18 February 2019

Renowned Melbourne-based artist Robbie Rowlands will return to the city next month to begin preparations for the Riddiford Arboretum Sculpture Symposium.

The Symposium has received $200,000 in funding through Create NSW, with the project tender awarded to Mr Rowlands during January's Extraordinary General Meeting.

Mr Rowlands previously served as an Artist In Residence in Broken Hill, and worked closely with the West Darling Machine Preservation Society to re-curate and reinterpret their display using projection, sound, and sculpture.

His work...

Massive response to gateway signage competition

Thursday 14 February 2019

Council has received an overwhelming response to its gateway signage competition with 73 entries lodged.

Entrants were asked to design one sign or a complete set of five signs to be placed at the main road entrances to Broken Hill, with the winning design to receive $5,000.

Council's Manager Communications, Darrin Manuel, said Council had been inundated with responses in the final days before the competition closed.

"We had almost half the entries arrive in the final two days of the competition, it was a pretty frantic period," he said.

Support for new library remains strong

Wednesday 13 February 2019

Council received a generally positive response to its plan to construct a new library during a recent open day at the Civic Centre.

Around 100 people attended the engagement session on Monday to view early concept plans and speak with Councillors, Council staff, and the project's architects, Neeson Murcutt (NMA).

Council's General Manager, James Roncon, said he hoped the session had provided new insight into the project.

"It was a great session, and we got an excellent response from the community which I think the staff and Councillors really...
