Mayor Darriea Turley AM has backed Broken Hill to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic stronger than ever as the city celebrates its 138th birthday.

Broken Hill was founded on this day in 1883 by boundary rider Charles Rasp, who discovered the city's famous orebody while working on Mt Gipps Station.

He and six associates subsequently founded the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) and the prosperity that followed gave rise to the city we call home today.

Mayor Turley said the success of Broken Hill throughout the years was testament to locals' strength and resilience.

"Broken Hill's history gives me every confidence we'll get through COVID-19 as a community," said Mayor Turley.

"It might feel like there isn't much to celebrate at the moment, but I think we should all take heart from today's milestone.

"We've been battling against the odds for well over a century, and we've overcome far greater hardships than this pandemic.

"Broken Hill people always stick together and support each other through hard times, and our community is continuing to show that same spirit despite the lockdown.

"Please keep up the fight and continue to keep each other safe."
