Broken Hill City Council wishes to congratulate 2017 inductee into the Nydia Edes Hall of Fame, Sandra Miller.
Sandra received the top honour in volunteering at the Volunteer Awards held at the West Football Club tonight.
She has served members of our community of all ages, assisting with the Salvation Army playgroup, Hospital Kiosk, Meals on Wheels, Scouts, and the mini-debs for the PCYC and YMCA.
However Sandra is perhaps best known as founder of the local Widows' Support Group, which she formed almost 10 years ago and continues to run to this day.
The Support Group provides comfort, friendship and assistance to recently bereaved widows, and offers critical support during their time of loss.
Mayor Darriea Turley said Sandra was a most worthy winner, who would sit comfortably alongside previous Hall Of Fame inductees.
"I think Sandra is the perfect selection to join the Hall Of Fame, you look at all the groups with which she's involved and it truly spans all ages of our community," said Mayor Turley.
"And I have to make special mention of her work founding the Widows' Support Group.
"To have built that support network from the ground up is a massive achievement, and I'm sure the group is cherished by each of its members for the assistance it offers during times of great sadness and heartbreak.
"On behalf of Council and Broken Hill, I congratulate Sandra on her induction."
Council wishes to thank major sponsors The Demo Club for their support and volunteers on the night, along with other sponsors: YMCA, Perilya Broken Hill Limited, Foundation Broken Hill, The Astra, The Haven Restaurant, The Musician’s Club, Alfresco’s Café, The Broken Hill Sturt Club, Award Picture Frames, Coles Broken Hill, Robinson College and Bell’s Milkbar.
