Boarding Houses

Council's Environmental Health Officer inspects and monitors boarding houses in the local government area to ensure that they comply with public health and building and safety standards under the Local Government Act 1993, Boarding Houses Act 2012 and the Boarding Houses Regulation 2013. They protect vulnerable residents by enforcing hygiene, overcrowding, and fire safety rules.

Core Responsibilities

• Inspections: Conduct routine and complaint-based checks of shared facilities such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas.
• Health & hygience: Check for pest infestations, mould, accumulated waste and general waste management.
• Overcrowding: Ensure room occupancy limits and sleeping arrangements comply with legal standards.
• Maintenance & ventilation: Verify that buildings are structurally sound, clean, well-lit and properly ventilated.
• Fire safety & services: Collaborate with fire authorities to confirm smoke alarms, extinguishers and emergency exits are functional.
