Broken Hill City Council will recognise and celebrate local volunteers at the upcoming volunteer high tea and awards ceremony.

Volunteer working group Chair, Councillor Marion Browne encouraged all volunteer groups to attend the event.

‘Volunteers make up an important part of the Broken Hill community and provide valuable contributions through their work with a wide variety of community groups and organisations.’

‘These individuals play such an important role in Broken Hill, so this event is a wonderful way to honour them and their commitment to our community’

The Event will also include the official presentation of the 2021 Volunteer Awards, which have been continuously postponed in recent years due to the ongoing changes and restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘We received an encouraging number of nominations from a great variety of individuals and groups in the 2021 nomination period, so it is fantastic to finally be able to formally recognise their efforts’

‘Hopefully the return of this years event will help boost the awards profile again and encourage individuals to nominate when the 2023 award nominations are opened.’

The event this year will also see special guest Mrs Margot White unveil the new Nydia Edes Volunteer Hall of Fame honour board, which will be installed on the walls of the Broken Hill Civic Centre.

‘Nydia Edes was the first female Alderman on the Broken Hill City Council and a recipient of the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal. Nydia worked tirelessly throughout her life for the improvement of women's conditions.’

‘To have Nydia’s daughter (Margot White) involved in the unveiling is really special. Margot has followed in her mother’s footsteps with a strong volunteering background herself, and we are all honoured to have her included in this celebration’

The 2022 Volunteer High Tea and Awards Ceremony will be held at the Broken Hill Civic Centre on Tuesday, 25th October from 4pm to 6pm.

RSVPs have been extended until midday Monday 24 October 2022.
