* Construction has begun on the new banner poles in the CBD. Lighting is yet to be added, and the poles can also incorporate speakers, wi-fi, and CCTV.

The CBD banner pole project is taking shape with installation now underway in Argent Street.

The poles will feature large alternating banners, lighting, and a heritage motif, and have the capacity for wi-fi, audio, and CCTV to be added in future.

The poles will be installed along Argent Street from Iodide Street to the Ibis Motel, and will extend into Sulphide, Bromide, Oxide, and Chloride Streets.

Council's General Manager, Jay Nankivell, said it was pleasing to see the banner pole project finally come to fruition.

"This is a project that the CBD business owners have been awaiting for many years, so it's great to be able to deliver it," he said.

"We had a few delays due to COVID and trying to avoid the Christmas shopping period, but we're now well underway and hoping to have everything completed by early May, weather permitting.

"The banners will add some real colour and vibrancy to the main street, and allow Council and local groups to promote major events or other important initiatives."

However, Mr Nankivell said construction would be paused during the Mundi Mundi Bash, which will see thousands of visitors descend on the city between April 21-23.

"We understand that some people might like to see this project finished as soon as possible, but given the amount of traffic and shoppers expected, it's important that we take a short break.

"We'll resume construction as soon as things have quietened down."
