Locals are invited to learn about local volunteer groups and grab some free plants when Council celebrates Local Government Week next month.

The Plant Giveaway and Volunteer Expo returns on August 9 at the Civic Centre, and will run from 10am-1pm.

There will be a broad range of volunteer organisations to chat with, along with a wide variety of hardy shrubs, groundcovers, and trees to be given away.

The event will also receive great support from local groups with a BBQ by Rotary, Donuts by the Scouts, a Merry Go Round operated by the Y's Mens Club.

Council's Community Development Coordinator, Rachel Merton, said she hoped to see the day grow even bigger in 2025.

"We had such a great response last year, there were a lot of people curious about volunteering and also what services are available through local volunteer groups," said Ms Merton.

"If you have a little spare time on your hands be sure to come along and have a chat, because you can often make a huge difference to people's lives by volunteering just a fraction of your time or skills.

"We're always very happy to see people taking the plants back to their homes as well.

"Every plant or groundcover in people's yards helps prevent soil erosion and keep the dust down, which helps control lead levels in our community.”

Volunteer groups wishing to take part in the event are encouraged to contact community.development@brokenhill.nsw.gov.au by July 20.
