Locals who have made an outstanding contribution to our community will be recognised at the Australia Day Awards later this month.

The 2021 theme for Australia Day is "Reflect, Respect, Celebrate", and award categories will include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, along with Citizenship Awards.

The ceremony will be held on January 26 in the Civic Centre Auditorium, with doors open from 8.30am for a 9am start.

Broken Hill's Australia Day Ambassador for 2021 is television journalist, keynote speaker, and women's right's campaigner, Emma Rossi.

Ms Rossi has spent nearly two decades reporting news and current affairs on national television, and is the Director, Media and Internal Communications for the ACCC.

She has also taken a national leadership role in improving online support for Australian women fleeing domestic violence, and was instrumental in the establishment of Mary's house, a refuge in Sydney's lower north shore for women and children.

Official proceedings will include a Welcome to Country, Australia Day addresses by Mayor Darriea Turley AM and Ms Rossi, a Citizenship Ceremony, and award presentations.

The event will conclude with a free morning tea.

Please note the ceremony is a COVID-safe event, and all attendees will be required to sign-in with a QR code to comply with COVID-19 regulations. Staff will be on hand to assist with sign-in.
