About Dirk
Dirk has spent more than 50 years working with his hands, first as a carpenter and now as an artist working across painting, drawing and carving. His practice is guided by curiosity and a desire to follow an idea wherever it leads, rather than being limited to a style or medium.
Nature is a constant source of inspiration, particularly the patterns, shapes and textures found in rocks, trees, leaves and the surrounding landscape. With his own art gallery providing the freedom to create, Dirk continues to explore the materials and ideas that inspire him.
The Project
For Dirk, Beyond the Dust is about looking beyond the dry appearance of the landscape to discover the beauty hidden within it. Our country can appear harsh and barren, a closer look reveals an abundance of colour, texture and life.
His mural draws inspiration from the rocks and landscape surrounding Broken Hill, bringing together reds, ochres, pinks and earthy tones with native grasses and tiny wildflowers emerging from the cracks and crevices.
“I’d like people to think about how much beauty can be found in places we might normally consider dry or harsh”
Connection to Place & Community
Dirk’s mural is deeply connected to the landscape around Broken Hill and the character of the Far West. And then the people, their authenticity and strong sense of community are a big part of what makes living here special.
Dirk believes community art provides an opportunity to tell local stories, celebrate the place we live and bring art into public spaces where everyone can experience it.
