About the city
Broken Hill, Australia's first Heritage Listed City, started life as a small mining village in the 1880s.
As the birthplace of BHP, home to the Brushmen of the Bush, and the spiritual forge of the Australian union movement, Broken Hill is an eclectic blend of arts, culture, industry, and heritage.
The city celebrated its past on Tuesday 20 January 2015 by becoming the first city in Australia to be heritage listed, and is now pioneering the future as it evolves into a technologically enhanced smart community.
