Social gatherings may be off the table for now, however Council has moved closer to providing a new centre for locals to come together in future.

Plans for the Broken Hill Cultural Precinct and Library & Archive were approved by the Western Regional Planning Panel (WRPP) late last week.

With the project's development application (DA) receiving the green light, Council can now ramp up efforts to secure funding for the new facility's construction.

Mayor Darriea Turley AM said the success of the DA was welcome good news in a difficult time for the city.

"At times like this it's important to remember that this pandemic isn't going to last forever and there are good things in our city's future," she said.

"The isolation measures really make you reflect on the importance of social gatherings, and having a new facility where community members of all ages can come together is going to be more valuable than ever.

"At a time when everything is locking down all around us in everyday life it's very pleasing to see a major project continuing to progress for our city."

Mayor Turley thanked Council's staff for their ongoing work on the project and across its other services.

"I understand that the WRPP was very complimentary of Council's approach to this project, from its planning and preparation through to the level of community engagement," she said.

"Staff should be congratulated for their previous work on this project."
