Applications are now open for the 2020 Artist in Residence program.

The program is run by the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery with the support of Create NSW, and awards $20,000 (excl. GST) to an artist or collaborative group to develop a responsive project for installation or presentation in the public domain.

The recipient must engage with the local community and draw inspiration from the people and place of Broken Hill.

Council's Gallery and Museum Programs Officer, Blake Griffiths, said the residency program was a great way to bring art into the community.

“The residency attracts artists that respond to different aspects of our community including its people, geographical location, history, and environment," he said.

"However the strength of the program is the mandate of artists to work with and within our local community.

"Previous artists have been creative in their interpretation of community engagement, with school and public workshops, lectures, BBQs, research in local archives, and importantly, finding or rediscovering new exhibition spaces.

“The exhibition of work outside of the gallery context creates opportunities for different conversations about the role of art in relation to Broken Hill."

Applications close at 5pm, 31 January 2020.

Any questions or requests for assistance with applications should be directed to Mr Griffiths on (08) 8080 3441.
