Council will continue its search for a new licensee to operate the airport cafe after a recent expression of interest attracted little response.

The former licensee gave Council notice on May 22 that they were not intending to continue running the cafe or interested in entering into a new license agreement.

First National Broken Hill were then engaged to begin the search for new operators.

Council's Chief Financial Officer, Jay Nankivell, said the venture attracted some genuine interest, however that interest did not eventuate in a new operator being secured.

"We believe it's a great opportunity, and First National Broken Hill have certainly been proactive in putting it to the market," Mr Nankivell said.

"You have 50,000 potential customers passing through annually, and that doesn't include the many people who work at the airport or use other facilities out there.

"It's a licensed premises, there's no competition, the license fee is minimal, terms are negotiable... it's a really affordable option for someone looking to establish themselves or their business in that space."

Mr Nankivell said Council would leave the café advertised in the hope of attracting a new operator in the near future.

"Our current operator vacates at the end of this month, so we'll install some vending machines in the meantime so people can still get snacks and a drink," Mr Nankivell said.

“Ideally we'd like to see a new licensee sooner rather than later. It's a great business opportunity, and it provides a valuable service for both locals and tourists alike."
