Target Group

Males and Females aged 12 to 24 years

Service Objective:

To assist Council and the community to address the interests, concerns and needs of young people through the operation of the City Youth Centre

Identified Needs:

  1. Protection from exploitation by peers and other people
  2. Employment opportunities
  3. Information and education about health and social issues such as drugs and suicide
  4. Opportunities to express their needs and opinions
  5. Recreational facilities

Key Activities:

  1. Planning and co-ordination - develop and maintain systems for the sharing of information between young people, service workers and related organisations, and work to identify key needs and issues and co-operative responses
  2. Promotion and advocacy - promote the interests, concerns and needs of young people to Council, the community and related organisations
  3. Consultation and empowerment - provide young people with the means of expressing their needs and opinions and having them acted upon
  4. Information and referral - provide information to young people about services available to them and assist them to access those services
  5. Advice and counselling - provide an initial point of access for advice, counselling or referral to young people who present with  problems or difficulties
  6. Legal and safety - provide young people with information about their rights; recognise and report instances of child abuse and neglect
  7. Youth projects - organise/promote/conduct a range of living skills, informational and recreational activities for young people
  8. General administrative duties

Youth Policy

This policy confirms Council's commitment to young people living in the City of Broken Hill.

This policy applies to Council's support for and services to young people aged 12 to 24 years living in the City of Broken Hill.

The policy is based upon the following principles:

  1. That the rights of local young people include the right to live in a safe ,caring, non discriminatory and just community;
  2. The right of young people to participate in and have access to the decision making that affects their lives;
  3. That the well being of young people needs to be nurtured, fostered and protected;
  4. That young people play an integral role in and make a positive contribution to, their community;
  5. That there are differences amongst young people and that these different interests need to be recognised.
