Residential Waste Services / Commercial Waste Services

Broken Hill City Council operates a free landfill site for its residents.  To help Council to keep this facility free, we urge residents to separate their waste as much as possible by using the "drop off" facility provided at our Landfill and wast depot in Wills Street.

In 2002 a new curb side green waste service was introduced for residents in Broken Hill.  Since its introduction, 1734 tonnes of green waste has been diverted from landfill.  In 2003, Council was successful in taking out the National Waste Minimisation Award in the Australian Tidy Towns Awards.

In order for Council to fulfil this role Council employs Environmental Health Officers who are given various delegated inspection and enforcement powers.

Some of the various pieces of legislation that Council has powers and responsibilities under include:

  • Local Government Act, 1993 and Regulations

  • Protection of the Environment Operations Act, 1997 and Regulations

  • Food Act, 1991 and Regulations

  • Public Health Act, 1991 and Regulations

  • Swimming Pools Act, 1992 and Regulations

  • Rural Fires Act, 1997 and Regulations

Complaints:

Council receives and investigates a wide range of complaints that broadly fit into the following categories:

  • Public Health

  • Public Safety

  • Public Nuisance

  • Environmental Matters
