The Local Government Area
Broken Hill is classified as a Group 4 council under the NSW Department of Local Government's classification of councils into eleven groups. Group 4 comprises urban regional Councils in NSW of similar population. The basic divisions are between urban and rural Councils and then subdivided according to population size and density.
There are thirty three urban regional Councils in Groups 4. The smallest Council in the group is Deniliquin (population 8,214) and the largest is Port Macquarie - Hastings (population 69,737). Broken Hill is in the lower half of the group according to population; being the third smallest. Group 4 councils closets to Broken Hill in population size are Armidale, Griffith, Kiama, Lithgow and Richmond Valley.
