The Living Desert Flora & Fauna Sanctuary
Flora & Fauna of the Barrier Ranges welcomes you to Broken Hill's Living Desert Flora and Fauna Sanctuary
Location
The Living Desert Flora and Fauna Sanctuary is located 9kms from the city centre. Take Kaolin Street (Nine Mile Road) and exit on the second right hand turn off.
Opening Times
Open daily between 9.00am - 5.00pm (Central Standard Time) Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Access can be either self guided or guided.

An Introduction To The Living Desert
A two (2) hour visit to the Living Desert from the City (return trip) will allow visitors to explore the Cultural Walk Trail within the Sanctuary and Sculpture Symposium. and gain an educational and cultural experience to further enhance your understanding of our Aboriginal Heritage and importance of the preservation of our environment for the benefit of furture generations. .
The Living Desert Reserve is nestled amongst the Barrier Ranges and is located 9 km from the City of Broken Hill. The Living Desert is a unique 2400ha reserve which commenced in 1992.
What you will discover on the 2.5km Sanctuary Cultural Walk Trail includes, Aboriginal Heritage, Sturt Peas and other wildflowers, an arboretum of endemic plants, geological interpretation, animal viewing hide, scenic lookout, prospectors mine site, quartz outcrop and free ranging fauna comprising of Wallabies and Red Kangaroos.
Another major attraction within the Living Desert is the Sculpture Symposium. Visit the sculptures at dawn or dusk for a view that will take your breath away.
In addition to the major attractions the Living Desert provides a recreational picnic area with free gas barbeques, shade shelters and toilets. The Sundown Cultural Walk Trail is located to the east of the Sanctuary which you can enter from the Tibooburra Road. It is envisaged that the Living Desert will ultimately be a showcase of environmental education and preservation which may encourage visitors to pursue further opportunities in the magnificent National Parks of the Western Division.
Funding for the numerous projects and attractions to date has been provided by Federal Government unemployment programs, The Natural Heritage Trust, Broken Hill City Council and a Regional Tourism grant for a total estimated expenditure of 2.5 million dollars.
The Friends of the Flora and Fauna of the Barrier Ranges are proud to acknowledge that this sanctuary is Broken Hill City Council's contribution to the environment for the protection of our endemic flora, fauna and for the better management of our eco-system, sustainability and bio diversity.
